The dangers of spreading infection with a toothache.Ok so this post is a little strange I admit for me nothing to do with travel, fashion or beauty, but I had to share this with you, what I never knew about having a toothache, you must be thinking yeah right I think we have all had one of those at some point in our lives right? But wait did you know this?

I’d unfortunately been suffering from a toothache, an on going root canal problem I’d had for about 7 years. It started quite quickly and  knew I was in trouble so off to the dentist I went.

I was given antibiotics which is always a problem for me as I am allergic to penicillin. The dentist explained that I was to take the medication and paracetamols. The next day I was in serious pain so back to the dentists again I went in tears and was given strong painkillers. It just got worse as the days went on, being in pain I automatically wanted to soothe the pain of the toothache so I reached for my hot water bottle, a nice furry cover made for a comforting warm cushion to lay my head and sooth my aching tooth. Well within 24 hours the infection had spread along 3 teeth and was now a huge abscess on my top jaw.

After having 3 children, one of which is a kidney and heart patient you would have thought I would’ve known not to put heat on the infection. Yes my furry warm comforter had spread the infection making the situation so much worse. I was now taking Codeine and paracetamols every 4 hours and sitting watching the clock, counting down the minutes until I could take the next ones, crying in pain and not knowing what to do. This may sound as if I am being dramatic but I can assure you I am not, I had my daughter normally, my eldest son emergency C section and my youngest son C section and nothing compared to the pain I was experiencing.

This went on for days and finally after it had made me so sick and I could cope no more I gave in and visited the out of hours dentist begging them to help me and take the tooth out, but there was nothing they could do, they did not have the facilities to do the extraction and could only check what was going on, X Ray me again, another £30 and send me on my way saying you will have to see the dentist tomorrow. The morning came and that was it I had decided it had to come out. Being as vain as I am this was a huge decision for me but I could take no more I could really not take the pain, the tooth is really close to the front of my mouth but I couldn’t have cared less at this point really.

So out it came the problem is the infection prevents the tooth from numbing and the pain was even worse and this continued even after the tooth was gone for 24 hours. I am now off the pain killers and hopefully on the road to recovery.

I had to share this with you not a great post I admit but I really never knew that putting a hot water bottle on your face when you had tooth ache could cause so much trouble and had to share my disastrous experience with you. I think I was more upset my dentist had not told me not to use one, if it is this serious you would think they would mention this at the time, but no I was told by the hospital as soon as I walked in, “I bet you have put heat on this haven’t you and used a hot water bottle” a little late to tell me know don’t you think !
